Marion Emme
Welcome to another year ☃️ Congratulations to everyone for pulling through to the end of the quarter/semester and surviving 2019! We hope you enjoyed your break and still have time to keep your mental health in top shape while we all get back to the grind. Take this time to relax for a moment, catch up with friends and family, and update yourself with a NWFASA newsletter. We have a lot to catch up on!

THE ASIAN  PACIFIC  ISLANDER  STUDENT  ASSOCIATION  AT PACIFIC LUTHERAN UNIVERSITY

"APISA stands for Asian Pacific Islander Student Association, but we stand for so much more beyond our title. Our mission statement is “to promote cultures within the Asian Pacific Islanders and educate ourselves, our peers, and the community so we can obtain unity through diversity and create a warm and welcoming environment for all students of Pacific Lutheran University.” We participate in a multitude of events and programs in order to live out our mission statement. Our annual back to school bash (B2SB) welcomes students of all identities to connect and interact with each other.
During our club meetings, we’ve done a myriad of different educational and social meetings. For example, last year we watched the Yappie miniseries and participated in engaging discussions about being Asian in America. APISA also works in conjunction with Na Hoaloha O Hawai’i at the annual Lūʻau. We help plan the event as a whole within different committees (finance, set up logistics, choreography, etc.) as well as perform! We are mostly known for dancing Tinikling at not only the Lūʻau, but in other outside performances PLU may ask of us! We have been with NWFASA for two years now and we couldn’t be any happier with our membership. Winning Fil-O has meant more to us than just a beautiful trophy and pride; we feel a better sense of belonging in NWFASA and are more excited than ever to create more connections, build new bonds, and expand our knowledge. Salamat! ♡"

Congratulations to APISA for winning Filipino Olympics 2019!

ABBY PASION:  ADDRESSING TOXIC  BEHAVIORS  IN  FILIPINO  FAMILIES

Addressing Toxic Behaviors in Filipino Families, written by our Oregon advisor Abby Pasion, has as of late received a lot of positive feedback from others. We highly recommend that you read it too! Abby talked about the post a bit,
"#OurMindOurMovement is a platform we at One Down created to help open up the conversation around mental health with our families and communities. The article I wrote, as well as the video One Down produced that my article supplemented, is just the first step for us to create a space for dialogue and reflection.
The next step, we hope, is for folks to feel inspired to step into a brave space and share their story with others using the hashtag.
We want to continue bringing awareness to the stigmas around mental health and toxic family relationships that have been so deeply embedded into our cultural community. And most importantly, we hope that folks - by reading the stories of others - may find closure to or validation of their struggles, and feel empowered to keep the conversation going!"

ALLIANCE MEETINGS

This month's alliance meeting was hosted by FASA sa UW Bothell! On top of addressing the usual updates, the NWFASA advisors facilitated a case study for groups to discuss ways to handle the struggles any org could experience. There were also updates on conference planning, regional retreats, and the current environmental status of the Philippines.

TFCU  X SEATTLE : ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE

Following the alliance meeting we headed to Seattle University to attend TFCUxTalks: Everything is Possible! This event was put in place by the United Filipino Club of SeattleU and hosted Rossella de Leon of the Foundation for Philippine Progress, singer/songwriter JR Aquino, and founder of #MagandangMorex Asia Jackson, as well as performances from As of Late and S3!
